1930s Make-Up: Greta Garbo Inspired

To me, doing tutorials based on stars from the Golden Age of Hollywood is like coming across a King Cobra... being a fan of serpents, I would be excited at the occurrence but also I would feel quite apprehensive too.

I decided to base this tutorial on the Swedish film star Greta Garbo, not just because of her iconic film status, but also I really loved her unique style of makeup.

Lady Gaga 'Judas' Inspired Make-up

The one thing I noticed mainly after completing this look is that it made my eyes look really small. I don't possess naturally big eyes like Lady Gaga so I do not really suit this look particularly..... but ah well.

Liza Minnelli in Cabaret Inspired Tutorial

OK, I'll be honest - I haven't actually seen this film fully. When it comes to musicals, unless it has Tim Curry in fishnets or John Belushi wearing sunglasses and a black tie, I am generally not really into them. So apologies if the look isn't a complete doppelganger to Ms Minnelli.

Here is a quick tutorial based on the classic Cabaret look. The first Cabaret opened up in the late 19th Century but became big in America between 1920s-1940s, heavily jazz orientated (with the likes of Peggy Lee and Nina Simone making guest appearances).

The makeup here basically focuses on making your eyes and mouth stand out above all your other features - so it is important to start off with a clear base so use a good coverage foundation. The eye makeup is somewhat linked to a 1920s flapper look - but it uses more bright colours than ashy colours. So you want to keep the eyes well defined and bright at the same time.

False lashes (both top and bottom) are almost a must for this look... and you preferably want them to be long and spiky as this will help to give your eyes a further 'pop'.

1920s/1930s Make Up: Bette Davis Inspired

"Fasten your seat belts...."

I finally resorted to it. I have been wanting to do a tutorial on the Fifth Warner Brother for a very long time... I guess the only thing putting me off is the fear that I won't do her much justice. But since this week marked the 103rd birthday of Ms Bette Davis I felt compelled to do this.

This particular look is based on the 1934 film "Of Human Bondage" where Bette plays a waitress turned prostitute - so, granted, not the most flattering make up in the world... well, maybe a little more flattering than her Baby Jane look.

Edie Sedgwick Inspired Make Up

"It's not that I'm rebelling. It's that I'm just trying to find another way."

There are a number of women who have sadly had their lives cruelly cut short - and probably one of the most tragic, mysterious short lives there was, was that of Edie Sedgwick. Known as Andy Warhol's muse in the sixties (appearing in a total of 12 Warhol films) and eventhough she was, you could say, a celebutante (as she was part of a wealthy Protestant family) she did become an icon for the alternative sixties culture.

So when it comes to Edie's makeup it was about the eyes... It was all about the eyes. So in my tutorial I have left out the face and lips as you can wear them as you wish.
